What is Stucco?

Stucco is an affordable exterior finish made from natural ingredients. When it’s applied correctly and given routine upkeep, this cladding can stay beautiful and intact for decades, enhancing your home’s curb appeal.

Stucco generally comes in two main styles:

  • Traditional stucco
  • Modern (contemporary) stucco

What Is Stucco Used For?

Stucco is a versatile finishing material applied to both the inside and outside of buildings. It stands out for being resistant to rot and mould, easy to look after, and cost‑effective. Thanks to this winning mix of durability and low price, stucco has become a go‑to choice on countless construction sites.

A skilled stucco contractor can put it on by hand with a trowel or spray it mechanically. While concrete walls are the most common base, stucco adheres just as well to brick, steel, and timber frames—so almost any structure can benefit from its rugged, climate‑tolerant surface. Simply put, it delivers an impressive finish wherever it’s applied.

Equally at home on classic facades and cutting‑edge designs, stucco can be customised to match any aesthetic. By selecting the right texture, you can give any building the exact look you want.

How is Stucco Made?

Stucco is created by blending Portland cement, sand, and water into a workable plaster. Because the recipe is so adaptable, builders can tailor it with different ingredients to suit a wide range of projects.

Traditional stucco

In a classic mix, lime often replaces some or all of the Portland cement. One big plus is convenience: the components are usually mixed on‑site and can be trowelled or sprayed on within minutes.

Customising the mix

  • More cement → increases hardness and long‑term durability.
  • More lime → keeps the plaster pliable and easier to shape.
  • Additives (e.g., glass fibres, acrylics) → boost strength, flexibility, and crack resistance.

Watch‑outs

Pushing the formula too far can backfire. An all‑cement batch, for example, cures into an extra‑hard coat that’s tougher to work and more likely to crack unless it’s applied over a secure metal or fibre lath. When mixed and installed correctly, though, a stucco finish can stay attractive and protective for up to 50 years.
